So you will not be able to imagine how I felt when I first opened my roster a month ago and saw that I have a flight to Johannesburg… I was filled with joy and I might even had a few tears rolling down my face. I was able to go home for the first time in 4 months since I’ve been here in Dubai, and what a big change this 4 months has been for me!
First of all, it was my first time living alone (by that I mean not living with my parents anymore), and then for it to be my first time living in another country 8 hours (of flying) from home!! These 4 months has been the best experience of my life discovering new things about myself, exploring new places, but also learning how to be content with being alone…
Yes, there is obviously more good than bad in this experience otherwise you would’ve read about me packing my bags and going home, which hopefully will not happen any time soon, even though I miss home soooooo much!
So I got to the briefing room overly excited and let everyone know it’s my first time home, so off course everyone knew how that felt and were really sweet towards me and whenever they would see me in the cabin they would talk a little bit about it. The flight itself was also a pleasure as I could speak Afrikaans to some passangers and they really appreciated it. I even started playing my own guessing game during boarding where I analysed the passangers approaching me and would then either greet them in afrikaans or english depending on where I thought they came from. One guy I greeted in Afrikaans by saying “goeie middag” (good afternoon) walked right past me, stopped for a while, turned around and the said, “ja dit is ‘n goeie middag” (yes, it is a good afternoon). hehe I really caught him off guard 😉
We got to the hotel at about 23:00 and there they were…. my parents and best friend sitting in the lobby waiting for ME !!! 🙂 at first they didnt recognise me but after a little akward wave I could only see their faces beaming with huge smiles, they were as excited as I was! I wish I could immediately jump towards them but we had to first listen to the hotel receptionist giving us a briefing about the hotel services. After that I headed towards them but was still not allowed to hug and kiss them as we are in public and I’m in my uniform (one of the EK rules). We quickly went up to my hotel room just to show them in what luxury and style I’ve been living in these past few months (haha) and to properly greet each other, stealing some hugs and kisses in the lift 😉
after the little chat and my mom’s attention to the finest detail of the room, we headed back home. It was such a weird feeling knowing that I’m finally able to see them but that it will only last for 24hours…
We quickly caught up with what’s going on as there was not that many ‘new’ news as they follow my blog and skype is part of the family already, hehe. We dropped my friend Nadri off at her home so that I could spend some quality time with my family as my dad will be leaving for Cape Town the next morning for a work meeting.
Arriving at home was such a warm feeling, and I couldn’t wait to see my dog and she could not believe that it was me! she kept jumping up and kissing me running towards my mom and dad and then again back to me. she followed me into my room and wouldn’t leave me alone for a second to even open my bag, she just kept kissing me with her nose and tried to lie on my lap, which she is way too big for. I loved seeing her !!!
and a better photo of me and ika
Our little family sat in the livingroom and I made an announcement that its time for presents! I started unpacking everything I have been collecting for them for the last few months and they were really surprised and happy 🙂
sadly I had to go to bed to have enough energy to meet all my dates (hehe) the next morning. It really felt like speed dating!! I had breakfast with my parents, before my dad had to go to the airport. It was really sad seeing him go but he said he’s sure I will have a flight back home very soon (lets hope so!)
I then had my first ‘date’ with marike, my friend from my previous workplace. We’ve had some amazing times together, partying nights through and going on a road trip around cape town, and then off course the boring work we had in common, but no need to go into more detail on that, bleh. I was so excited to meet her as she will be getting married in october!!! we had a lovely time catching up and she seems truely happy and inlove, being a ‘lady of leisure’ while finalising everything before moving to mosambique with future hubby. I will definately miss her but I’ll just have to make a plan to go and visit her in that beautiful place!! I was also excited telling her about the possibility of making it back home in time for her wedding, so lets all start praying please!! 😉 so the next time I’ll see her will be on her wedding day!! Marike, I know you and Rayno will knock the socks off marriage, hehe, you’re just the perfect fit! even though you might be half his size, hehe.
Next up: Regardt, my still very close friend 😉 even though we’ve been through some hard times in our relationship we still fight for it trying to savour all the good moments. We held each other for quite some time before letting go and I was genuinely happy to see him, smiling… he took me for a short ‘roadtrip’ in our neighbourhood showing me the 6 new speed bumps in starkey avenue, haha, and then we went to our favourite local place, waverly plaza!! we spend many days here walking around this very small mall looking if there might be a new kitten for me to buy (even though I never really had the guts to buy one) or to eat some pancakes that the old ladies of the bakery makes on saturdays… ah good times. There were one new shoe store now, and a new restaurant opening up soon, wow big stuff for little waverly, hehe. I loved spending time with him, just talking about what we’ve been up to and it felt as if I’ve never left. Can’t wait till you get over your fear of flying and come and visit me regardt!!! ❤
Last but definately not the least I met up with my best friend for almost 18 years (yes, this time I counted) Nadri !! we as always have the best time talking about ordinary stuff but laughing as if its the best jokes ever. If you’re not use to our way of communicating you would probably think we’re crazy or rude but that’s just what you get after spending so many years with one another. We have been labelled an old married couple even. I love her to bits!!! thank you for always being there for me and my family, words can not say how much I appreciate everything you’ve done for me in my life. Our frienship is 18 years old, soon its not even a teenager anymore….scary!! so anyway before I get side tracked (like only me and nadri can) we had a good chat and even better laughs before I had to leave again for my other duties, haha.
we forgot to take a picture! but here’s one of my fav ones 🙂
I went back home, started packing, had wayyyy too many things to fit in the bag, so I gave up and let my mom do it, like old times 😉 The grandparents came to say hello, and it was really good talking to them for a while. their planning a trip to the western cape for this week, as it is flower season there, breathtaking landscapes!
I took a 2hour nap and with feelings of sadness I put on my uniform. I wished that I could stay longer, as this 24hours at that time only made me miss home more. It was quite a bitter sweet ending…
Mom and nadri drove me back to the airport and we had something to drink while waiting for the rest of the crew to arrive. we took a few silly photos and off I went to go and explore the world again!
*I would like to thank my parents for all the love and support during this new adventure in my life. without you I would not be able to do it. Your messages and skype sessions gives me strength to go on until I see you again 🙂 I love you and can’t wait to see you again
